1. Preparation

Before you start ironing, make sure your textiles are clean and dry. If you are modifying a used item of clothing, it is advisable to wash it beforehand to remove any residues or fabric impurities. Make sure the fabric is wrinkle-free – iron it beforehand if necessary.

2. Positioning the iron-on transfer

Place the iron-on transfer on the desired spot on your textile. It is important to carefully consider the position beforehand, as you will not be able to move the design after ironing. Many iron-on transfers have a protective film on the back that protects the image from direct heat. When applying the iron-on transfer, check that you are applying it the right way up (the design should be visible after ironing).

3. Ironing

Set your iron to the highest setting (without steam function) and wait until it is properly hot. Place a thin cloth or baking paper over the iron-on transfer to protect it from direct heat. Now, iron the iron-on transfer evenly with firm pressure for about 10 to 20 seconds. The duration may vary depending on the material of the textile and the type of iron-on transfer – always check the manufacturer's instructions.

4. Allow to cool

Allow the textile with the iron-on transfer to cool completely before peeling off the backing paper. This prevents the design from not adhering properly and potentially coming loose. Carefully peel off the paper to reveal the design. If edges are still lifting, repeat the ironing process.

5. Care after application

Ensure that you do not wash the textile for the first 24 hours after applying the iron-on transfer to ensure durability. After this time, you can wash the garment at a low temperature – ideally inside out and without the use of fabric softener, to prolong the life of the design.
